On the road to Mt Cook.

11 december 2017 - Christchurch, Nieuw-Zeeland

Yesterday we left Dunedin though we had some rain during the night and during breakfast it remained dry during the travel with only an occasional drip here and there. We travelled true the city and had expected a university and college ground like in England or as in New England in the USA. But here was nothing interesting to see. Most students have left the city anyhow for the summer holidays, but on Friday we saw quite some students with there graduate gowns and there parents having lunch here and there. We continued the SH 1 further North in nice undulating landscape sometimes with nice beaches and the Southern Pacific in sight. We went of the road to see the often named Fleurs Place restaurant, what we saw was an old shed but certainly nice food because the restaurant was already full at 12 o'clock. We continued to see the famous boulders. We were lucky because you see them only with low tide. The look like big stone eggs and sometimes they brake but you can stil see it was an egg. A little further on the road you find Oamaru. Around 1880 it had its heyday. They became rich on refrigerated meat shipping. They build enormous Victorian buildings. Some have been restored. You see theatres, a opera-house, court building, 2 churches etc. All in the middle of nowhere.

From here we continued our way inland to Mount Cook National Park. We stayed in a cabin at Glentanner Park. Our Frisian friends had arrived a day before. The next morning we had to be up early for a tour on Tasman Lake. In 1970 there was no lake at all, and by 2008 it had grown to 7kms in length. Here you see were climate change is bringing us. Now you see some dirty ice mountains in the lake. The whole sight makes you sad. The next day we will continue to Christchurch.
